From the recording Theology For A Shaken Nation
Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Well I was watchin’ the news with my coffee goin’ cold,
Same old story, just a little more bold.
A senator was talkin’ ’bout law and theology,
Sayin’ heaven sure as hell’s got an immigration policy.
He said, “Let me tell you what that looks like, and I swear that this is true,
The folks who get to heaven’ll be just like me and you.
They’ll speak the same, they’ll look the same, white as the glowin’ moon,
And everyone will dance along to the same dog-whistle tune.”
[Verse 2]
He said there’s gates, and there’s rules, and there’s lines you gotta mind,
Some folks get waved right through, some get left behind.
Said it ain’t about hate, no sir, don’t get me wrong,
It’s just about order — been that way all along.
He said mercy’s real selective when the numbers get tight,
And compassion needs paperwork before it shows up right.
I nodded like I understood what he was tryin’ to say,
Though it sounded like them old regimes we swore we’d never obey.
[Verse 3]
He said heaven’s real peaceful, real quiet, real clean,
No protesters messin’ up the in-between.
No cryin’ kids askin’ where their momma went,
No questions asked how the border got bent.
He said the rules are eternal, carved deep and divine,
And they’re meant for the ones who stay inside the line.
And when I asked who wrote ’em, he just smiled and replied,
“Well… not me.”
And he pointed up toward the sky.
[Refrain]
Heaven’s got an immigration policy,
A system you can trust.
But if it looks a little familiar,
Well… that’s probably just us.
[Verse 4]
I tried picturin’ Jesus with a badge and a gun,
Mask on its face sayin’, “Don’t move, don’t run.”
Tried picturin’ angels sayin’, “Sir, step aside,”
While somebody’s whole world was gettin’ denied.
Didn’t line up much with the stories I’d heard,
’
Bout lost things found and grace without terms.
But maybe I misread all them red-letter lines—
Or maybe heaven’s changed
,
Just to fit a party line.
[Tag – quiet]
If heaven’s got an immigration policy,
I hope somebody checks it well —
’Cause the way they’re explainin’ heaven these days…
To me it sounds like hell.
